Terms of Service
Effective date: 2026-08-11Last updated: 2026-08-01
The short version
Serial & Story is published by Anchorwright. Household is free, with no item limit, for as long as you use the app — that’s a real product commitment, not a promotional offer, and the section below on pricing spells out exactly how we’d change it if we ever had to: at least 14 days’ notice, given inside the app itself, before any change to that specific promise takes effect. Beyond that, these are fairly ordinary terms: don’t misuse the app, the exports aren’t legal or insurance advice, subscriptions renew until you cancel them through Apple, and we’re not liable for outcomes we don’t control. The rest of this document covers each of those precisely.
1. Acceptance of these terms
By downloading, installing, or using Serial & Story (the “app”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don’t agree, don’t use the app. These terms apply alongside our Privacy Policy, which governs how the app handles your information.
2. Who this agreement is with
Serial & Story is published by Anchorwright, a Texas limited liability company. Throughout this document, “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to Anchorwright. Questions about these terms: hello@anchorwright.com.
3. What the app is — and isn’t
Serial & Story is a personal-property documentation tool: you record descriptions, photos, values, serial numbers, and the story behind items you own, and export that record for insurance, police, an appraiser, or your own attorney.
It is not an insurance product, an insurance broker, a law firm, or a substitute for legal or financial advice. Exports generated by the app (the Insurance & Police report, the Attorney Handoff document, and any other export) are records of information you entered — they carry no legal effect on their own, are not a will, are not a legally binding designation of an heir, and are not a guarantee that any insurer, police department, or court will accept them for any purpose. The “For Your Heirs” field is an informal note; using it does not change your actual estate plan. Anything in the app framed as an export “for your attorney” is exactly that — a data handoff for a professional to review, not a substitute for their advice.
4. Pricing, subscriptions, and the Household promise
Household is free — no item limit, no time limit, no subscription required — for adding, viewing, editing, and exporting items in that bundle. As of these Terms, this is a deliberate product commitment, not an introductory or promotional offer, and we intend to keep it.
Equipment, Vehicles, Collectibles & Jewelry, and Firearms require an active Serial & Story+ subscription to add new items. Viewing and exporting items you’ve already added never requires an active subscription, in any bundle. Serial & Story+ also covers your Digital Legacy recovery key and the Report Multiple Items and Attorney Handoff exports. Exporting to CSV is always free, in every bundle, whether or not you have an active subscription.
If we ever need to change the specific commitment above — Household’s free, unlimited status — because of something outside our reasonable control (for example, a change in Apple’s own App Store policies, or a change in what it costs to operate the app), we will give you at least 14 days’ notice, shown inside the app itself, before that change takes effect for you. Because the app has no accounts and no email collection (see the Privacy Policy), the notice lives inside the app — you’ll see it the moment you open Settings and again in the app’s own “What’s New” screen. Updated 2026-08-01: the app also uses a silent push notification to prompt a faster check for a new notice when your device is online — no alert, badge, or sound is shown by that push itself, and it carries no personal data; it’s purely a “go check for something new” signal, not the notice itself. Whether or not that silent push reaches your device, the 14-day window is counted from the date you first actually see the notice inside the app, not from whenever it was published — so the guarantee holds even for a device that’s offline, has notifications limited, or simply hasn’t been opened in a while. This 14-day notice commitment applies specifically to the Household free-tier promise in this section — see Section 11 for how we handle changes to the rest of these Terms.
Serial & Story+ subscriptions are billed through Apple’s App Store as auto-renewing subscriptions, under the terms below:
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.
- Subscriptions automatically renew for the same length of term unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, at the then-current subscription price.
- You can manage your subscription and turn off auto-renewal at any time in your Apple ID account settings, after purchase — the app itself has no billing controls of its own, since Apple handles the entire transaction.
- No refund or cancellation of the current subscription period is available directly from us once it has begun; refund requests go through Apple, per Apple’s own policies.
- We may change subscription pricing for future terms; where Apple’s platform requires advance notice of a price increase for existing subscribers, that notice is delivered per Apple’s own mechanism, not a separate one from us.
5. Your content
Everything you enter into the app — descriptions, photos, values, serial numbers, the Story fields — is yours. We don’t claim ownership of it, and per the Privacy Policy, we can’t read it in the first place; it’s encrypted on your device before it’s ever stored or synced. You’re responsible for the accuracy of what you enter — the app can help you capture it (on-device scanning, dictation) but doesn’t verify it against anything.
You’re responsible for keeping your device, your Apple ID, and (if you export or share it) your Recovery Key secure. Anyone who has your Recovery Key can decrypt your data — see the Privacy Policy’s “How the encryption key is protected” section.
6. Acceptable use
Use Serial & Story for its intended purpose — documenting your own personal property. Don’t:
- use the app to store or process information you don’t have the right to hold;
- attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or bypass any security or entitlement mechanism in the app;
- use the app in a way that violates any law applicable to you; or
- misrepresent an export generated by the app as something it isn’t (a legally binding will, a guarantee of insurance coverage, or similar).
7. Disclaimers
The app is provided “as is” and “as available.” We don’t guarantee it will be error-free, uninterrupted, or available at all times. On-device features (OCR text recognition, dictation, background removal) are best-effort and can misread or mis-segment a photo — always review what they fill in before relying on it. We don’t guarantee that any insurer, police department, appraiser, or attorney will accept an export generated by this app, or that the app’s records will be sufficient for any claim, legal proceeding, or estate matter.
To the extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
8. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, Anchorwright is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app — including loss of data, loss of documented property records, or any outcome of an insurance claim, legal proceeding, or estate matter where the app’s exports were used. Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms or your use of the app is limited to the amount you paid us (if any) in the twelve months before the claim arose.
Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.
9. Termination
You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it from your device; see the Privacy Policy’s “Delete data” section for what that does and doesn’t remove. We may suspend or terminate access to features that depend on our own systems (none currently exist beyond Apple’s own CloudKit/StoreKit) if we reasonably believe these terms have been violated, though given the app’s local-first, no-account design, this is expected to be a rare and largely theoretical provision.
10. Third-party services
The app relies on Apple’s own services — iCloud/CloudKit for sync, StoreKit for subscriptions, and on-device Vision/Speech frameworks. Your use of those services is also subject to Apple’s own terms, which we don’t control.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. When we do, we’ll update the “Last updated” date above, and for a material change, note it within the app. The one specific exception is Section 4’s Household free-tier commitment, which carries its own, stricter 14-day in-app notice requirement — that section’s own notice mechanism governs a change to that specific promise, in addition to (not instead of) this general update process.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles, except where applicable consumer-protection law in your own jurisdiction requires otherwise.
